Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

An Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion (EMHC) is a lay member of the Catholic Church who is authorized to assist the priest and deacon in distributing Holy Communion during Mass when there is a genuine pastoral need. Their role is to serve the Church and the community by helping distribute the Body and Blood of Christ reverently and respectfully. They may also bring Holy Communion to the sick, elderly, or homebound who are unable to attend Mass.

Who can become an Extraordinary Minister?

A person who:

  • Is a practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church.

  • Has received the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Holy Communion.

  • Lives a life consistent with the teachings and values of the Catholic faith.

  • Demonstrates faith, reverence, humility, and respect for the Eucharist.

  • Is willing to serve the parish community.

  • Receives the necessary formation and authorization according to diocesan and parish guidelines.

Important: This is an extraordinary ministry, not a replacement for the priest or deacon. Lay ministers serve only when there is a genuine need and they have been properly appointed or authorized.
